What is Sewa?

The word ‘SEWA’ in Sanskrit means selfless service to the sick, poor, destitute, vulnerable and oppressed members of our social structure and that is exactly what this organization is doing.

Sewa Canada International’s motto is ‘Service to humanity is service to God’ (Nar sewa Narayan sewa) because we believe that whole world is one family (Vasudhaiva kutumbakam) so, May all be happy; May all be free from sickness (Sarve Bhavantu Sukhinah; Sarve Santu Niramaya).

On Going Project

Hindu and Sikh refugees fleeing religious persecution in Pakistan arrive in India with almost nothing. Once in India, they face challenging conditions in New Delhi, Rajasthan, and Gujarat, unable to earn an income or find legal employment. Supported by Samaritans and well-wishers, they live in refugee camps. Women and girls, who have suffered the most, find some safety and peace of mind in India but continue to struggle due to trauma, illiteracy, and lack of legal status.

Sewa Canada International has launched a project to help these refugees in New Delhi through:

  • Initial resettlement
  • Counselling for women
  • Life skills training and self-employment
  • Children’s education
  • Infrastructure improvements in refugee camps

At the Adarsh Nagar camp in New Delhi, women and girls are receiving life skills training and counselling, including daily sewing classes by a trained teacher/counsellor. There is much more that can be done to help these refugees become self-reliant and heal from their past traumas.
