About Sewa

Sewa Canada is a leading humanitarian aid and development-oriented charity with a focus on selfless humanitarian efforts by providing service to all irrespective of race, nationality, religion, or sex.

Sewa Canada International Aid Inc was started in 1991 as the Sewa Bharati Toronto Chapter by its founder Mrs. Asha Sehgal with assistance from Mr. Sat Wadhwa and Mr. Rampuri. The word ‘Sewa’ in Sanskrit means selfless service to the sick, poor, destitute, vulnerable and oppressed members of our social structure. Sewa Canada’s motto is ‘Service to Humanity is Service to God’ (Nar Sewa Narayan Sewa) because we believe that whole world is one family (Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam) so, May all be happy; May all be free from sickness. Sewa Canada attempts to serve the poor and underprivileged through poverty alleviation, education, health, disaster relief and social development projects in India, Canada and other countries.

Sewa Canada International Aid Inc began in 1991 but was formally registered as a non-profit charitable organization in January 1999. Sewa Canada is a registered charity with the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA). Sewa Canada chapters are located in Vancouver, Toronto, Markham, London, Windsor, Kitchener, Waterloo, Milton etc. CRA charity registration number is 885411249RR0001.

Through our innovative and selfless service programs we continuously strive to help people in need through donations and by engaging our trusted partners.

Our approach is that our commitment to Sewa Canada projects will be matched with strong financial and business controls to assure that the money we invest ends up accomplishing our and the donor’s intended goals. We follow strict financial control which in turn has helped us maintain close to 96% project efficiency ratio in the last three years.

Our Approach

  • We engage our trusted partners/agents to identify needs and carry out our Sewa program on the ground. We don’t do it alone!
  • We build strategic alliances with organizations that have the knowledge and infrastructure to achieve our mission.
  • We only fund trusted local organizations with common humanitarian concerns at the grassroots level.
  • We regularly monitor progress of the programs and audit the impact by visiting them in person.
  • We keep our donors informed how their adopted program is accomplishing their vision.
  • We encourage Sewa programs to be self-sufficient or self-supporting and once it is achieved then we move on to next challenge.
  • We rely on our dedicated volunteers and chapters for financial support.
  • We rely on you – our individual and corporate donors for financial support.

Financial Accountability

  • Our financial affairs are conducted in a responsible manner, consistent with the ethical obligations of stewardship and the legal requirements of provincial and federal regulators.
  • All donations are and will be used to support the charity’s objects, as registered with CRA.
  • No more will be spent on administration and fundraising than is required to ensure effective management and resource development.
  • The cost-effectiveness of the charity’s fundraising program will be reviewed regularly by the governing board.
