Sewa Canada International will match your donations to the first CAD$ 10,000 collected. Donate now to double your impact.

Why?
The maternal mortality rate in Nepal is 239 per 100,000 live births, gradually decreasing; however can be argued to be higher in rural areas, where chances of one in thirty women dying during pregnancy and childbirth. Similarly, the newborn mortality rate is 21 per 1000 live births. The various barriers that influence these indicators include inaccessibility of medical care and health services. These are caused by geographical, institutional, socio-cultural and financial obstacles. In addition, ineffective referral mechanism between all levels of service delivery due to inadequate communication and transportation and poor quality of health services is also a contributor.
What?
Sewa Canada International, has undertaken extensive work across Nepal to improve its medical infrastructure over the last three years. This included making Solukhumbu district fully equipped with Ultra-Sound machines, in its villages with the supply of 27 such units by Sewa Canada International, to reduce maternal deaths and improve maternal care.
In the remote Western district of Doti in Nepal, we have partnered with Smart Health Global (SHG) in Nepal, a registered not for profit to strengthens the health system through context appropriate evidence informed technology to reduce mortality and morbidity among women, newborn and children. Smartphone apps for lay health workers to increase hospital delivery and telemedicine service – connecting rural services with advanced capacities are some of the examples.  To learn more about Smart Health Global, visit their website  or click here . This work will be done in collaboration with local government’s health agencies.
How?
  • Build and deploy digital health tools to support healthcare providers to ensure better access to quality healthcare services.
  • Train and support frontline health workers to use digital tools for telehealth services.
  • Train and equip lay health workers (FCHVs) with digital technology to promote the health-seeking behaviour of community people.
  • Coordination and collaboration with Local Government, District Health Office, Doctors and one of the tertiary level hospitals for the telehealth services.
Where and Who will benefit?
Women and newborns in the remote western mountainous districts of Badimalika Municipality of Bajura district and Jorayal Rural Municipality of Doti district, Nepal.
Benefits to these communities?
The health care service will support the continuum of care – women and newborns. Health workers will identify health needs with the help of smartphone apps, track conditions/diseases, health promotion, prevention and provide referral services connecting the clients to the health facility. Health facility has trained primary health care workers, and if required receives support through telemedicine or timely referral to hospitals. This process is expected to be operational and will enhance early identification, diagnosis and treatment at different levels of care.
