Hunger Crisis in Kenya Urgent Food Relief |
Sub-Saharan Africa is currently facing one of its most severe food crises in decades, with millions in dire need of humanitarian aid. Among the hardest-hit countries is Kenya, where approximately 4 million people are suffering from hunger and starvation. The failure of four consecutive rainy seasons has led to a severe drought, exacerbating the crisis. High inflation, conflicts, and displacement are further worsening the situation, putting lives at serious risk. This hunger crisis is not only depriving people of food but also causing widespread consequences, such as increased school dropouts, resource conflicts, and higher rates of child marriages. Despite coverage by media outlets like DW, CNN, Reuters, other mediathis crisis remains underreported and overshadowed by other global events. In response, Sewa Canada International Aid Inc., is collaborating with Sewa Kenya under Hindu Religious & Service Centre (HRSC) to provide food relief to as many people as possible. So far, Sewa Kenya has served 6,000 families across three counties—Kilifi, Machakos, and Mamba Village—out of a total of 29 counties in Kenya. Local volunteers are distributing food packages and water to 15 villages and 15 schools in these areas, with each family receiving a 20-kilogram food kit. However, much more remains to be done, and urgent help is needed to address this crisis. By joining forces, we can make a difference in the lives of those facing hunger and starvation in Kenya. |
Updates on our Fundraiser for Kenya & Progress |
Sewa Canada International successfully raised C$10,000 through a combination of GoFundMe campaigns, Facebook donations, and corporate contributions, all of which were directly transferred to Sewa Kenya under the Hindu Religious & Service Centre (HRSC) to support those affected by the hunger crisis in Kenya. On March 12, 2023, these funds were used to provide 900 families with 15 kilograms of basic food rations each. The distribution took place at Syumile Health Centre, just outside Makindu Town in Makueni County, located 190 kilometers from Nairobi. Volunteers from the Makindu Sikh Temple (Gurudwara Sahib) also joined in this selfless service alongside Sewa Kenya, embodying the spirit of Seva. The Sewa Kenya team began their journey at 5:15 am local time, departing with trucks loaded with food supplies from Nairobi. | They arrived at Makindu Gurudwara Sahib by 8:30 am, where they were warmly welcomed with a hearty breakfast. The team then reached the famine relief location by 9:40 am, and distribution commenced shortly after at 10:00 am. The food rations were a much-needed relief for the families suffering from the ongoing famine, which has impacted many counties across Kenya and other parts of Eastern Africa. By noon, the distribution to all 900 families was successfully completed. To conclude the day's efforts, Sewa Kenya's volunteers were treated to a hot and delicious lunch at the Makindu Gurudwara Sahib, in appreciation of their dedication and hard work. Sewa Canada International extends its gratitude to all the donors who contributed to this vital cause, helping provide much-needed relief to those in crisis. |
