Lines of the needy getting longer every day, as our Food For Life volunteers continue to serve up to 1500 people everyday for breakfast and dinner….in Antakya, Turkey.
Update from our volunteers on the ground…in Harbiye, Antakya…..serving survivors of the Earth quake for the last 5 days….breakfast and dinner up to 1500 people now
Continuing to serve 1300 meals every day. As word spreads, more people are seeking food at our station. Our volunteers peeling potatoes in progress for serving dinner today. The volunteers are hearing of spread of Cholera. Hence they are putting safeguards in place like using bottled water brought in from Istanbul, washing pots with bottled water and of course for cooking. Continuing to serve in adverse conditions….
Our volunteers continue to serve, start early at 6:00am, prepare, cook, serve the 100s of survivors who show up at their distribution point in Harbiye, near Antakya….serving selflessly.
R & R for our Food For Life volunteers (from ISKCON Turkey & Hungary) on the ground serving in Turkey means…….some sleeping inside the truck…..half the team sleeping outside, next to a fire, in winter temperatures. They have a small generator for lights and limited heating in the truck. Security issues exist too. However, continuing to serve, overcoming adversity & challenges….
Volunteer team of Sewa Canada International Aid Inc.‘s partner organization “Food For Life” (ISKCON Turkey & Hungary) arrived to Antakya, Hatay province today by road with their truck loaded with equipment and materials to provide 800 to 1200 hot meals per day. In communication with governing local village headmen, they were directed to 3 nearby villages to setup cooking equipment to start food distribution. After unloading, the team has settled down for the night in a location called Harbiye for the night. Team will sleep in their sleeping bags around a wood fed drum heater or in the vehicles. No electricity, no water. They are expected to start cooking early tomorrow morning.
