During the devastating second wave of COVID-19 in India, Sewa Canada International launched a comprehensive $1.3 million campaign to provide critical relief and support. This effort, titled "Helping India Conquer the 2nd Wave of COVID-19," was carried out in 10 provinces across India and focused on three key areas: immediate oxygen relief, short-term aid, and long-term relief. Here are some highlights of the project:
1) Immediate oxygen relief
- Deployed 230 Oxygen Concentrators and nearly 3,000 oxygen-related accessories, oximeters, and thermometers in COVID Care Centres in 10 provinces, including Chhattisgarh, Gujarat, Karnataka, Kerala, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Manipur, Punjab, Assam, and Tamil Nadu.
- Conducted oxygen level and temperature checks in vulnerable communities and densely populated areas.
2) Short Term Relief
- Provided food relief to those affected by COVID-19 and the ongoing lockdowns across many provinces.
- Supported families by performing cremations and last rites for COVID victims whose bodies went unclaimed.
- Vaccination drives were organized to subsidize vaccinations for frontline volunteers and those in need.
- Distributed masks, sanitizers, medicines, and organized sanitization drives in impacted areas.
- Covered setup and operational costs of COVID Care Centres.
3) Long term relief provided in 10 provinces of India during 2021 – 2022.
- Set up 8 oxygen plants and distribution systems for medical oxygen in budget hospitals serving rural, underprivileged areas, ensuring sustainability for future waves.
- Provided 3 fully equipped ambulances and more than $100,000 worth of life-saving medical equipment to remote hospitals.
- Focused on mitigating long-term social impacts, providing support to widows, children, and marginalized families who lost breadwinners during the pandemic.
