Wayanad Landslides Disaster Relief

In the Wayanad district of Kerala, India, over 125 people have tragically lost their lives, and hundreds more are feared trapped after three landslides hit the region within four hours amid heavy rain. Over 4,000 individuals have been hospitalized. Rescue efforts are underway, despite challenging weather conditions and forecasts of further rain. Multiple agencies, including the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and the Armed Forces, have joined the operation. The affected areas include Mundakkai, Chooralmala, Attamala, and Noolpuzha. Roads have collapsed, a bridge has been swept away, and several areas have become inaccessible.

Sewa Canada International’s partner organizations, Seva Bharathi Keralam, are actively working on the ground, providing critical aid. They are assisting in the following ways:

  1. Supporting the National Disaster Response Force in their rescue operations.
  2. Assisting in the identification of victims’ bodies as they are recovered.
  3. Preserving bodies in medical freezers for identification by surviving relatives.
  4. Arranging funeral services for the deceased and deploying mobile crematoriums.
  5. Providing food to around 500 people, with the number expected to rise in the coming days.
  6. Setting up community kitchens to ensure that victims have access to hot meals and that no one goes hungry.
  7. Offering urgent medical care to the injured and facilitating access to healthcare facilities using ambulances and other resources.
  8. Supplying clothes, essentials, and shelter materials to survivors and those left homeless.
  9. Deploying additional Seva Bharathi ambulances from various districts of Kerala to Wayanad.
  10. Reaching previously inaccessible areas to extend rescue and relief services.
  11. Equipping rescue teams with more resources and equipment to save lives.

100% of your donations will directly support these ongoing efforts on the ground. As the rescue phase concludes, the funds raised will shift to rehabilitation and rebuilding in the coming weeks and months. Once assessments are completed, these efforts could include constructing homes, funding education for 100 orphaned children, rebuilding infrastructure, and providing skills training for survivors to become self-reliant.

All donors will receive tax-deductible receipts in Canada, along with regular updates on our website and this page as the situation progresses. We kindly urge you to donate generously.Donations can also be made by cheque, payable to “Sewa Canada International,” and mailed to the following address. Please mention “Wayanad Landslides Relief”:
